RPG habit tracker: your life as an RPG, minus the grind

· Updated

A life RPG app (or RPG habit tracker) turns real-life tasks and habits into game mechanics: quests give XP, XP raises your level, and your character sheet shows what you have been training. CORTEX is a free one: finished tasks level up five attributes – STR, INT, WIS, CHR and DEX – unlock ranks and achievements, and pay out credits you spend on rewards you pick yourself.

In short
  • CORTEX is a free gamified productivity app – tasks, a one-click day plan, time tracking and habits, with XP, levels and real-life rewards.
  • In CORTEX, completed tasks earn XP based on priority and estimate; a completed goal earns 100 XP and daily logs earn XP too.
  • Five attributes level up from the categories of your goals: STR (health, sport), INT (work, study, finance), WIS (personal, reading, journal), CHR (family, social, networking) and DEX (chores, errands, admin and quick tasks of 15 minutes or less).
  • Credits from tasks buy your own real-life rewards in the shop; there is a daily reward of 100 credits and a mystery box for 250. Credits cannot be bought – no pay-to-win.
  • Alliances add co-op: invites, roles, chat, alliance challenges and a leaderboard.

The core loop: quest → XP → level → loot

Every good RPG runs on a loop you want to repeat. A life RPG borrows it and plugs in real life:

Game termIn real lifeIn CORTEX
QuestA task with a clear "done"Tasks with priority, estimate and difficulty (trivial → heroic)
Main quest lineA long-term goalGoals with progress from tasks, 100 XP on completion
DailiesRepeating routinesRecurring tasks (*daily) and habits
Buffs / debuffsGood and bad habitsGood habits (buffs), bad habits with a daily limit (debuffs)
XP and levelsVisible progressXP from tasks, goals and daily logs; level and rank
Character buildWhat you actually trainFive attributes on a radar chart
LootRewards you enjoyCredits → reward shop, daily reward, mystery box
Guild / raidDoing it with friendsAlliances, chat, challenges, leaderboard

The trick that makes it stick: the loop has to close today. Finish a quest, see the XP bar move, earn credits. Waiting six months for a goal to pay off is how real life loses to video games. If you want the theory first, read how to gamify your life.

Your build: STR, INT, WIS, CHR, DEX

The character page shows your level, rank and an attribute radar. Attributes grow from the category of the goal a finished task belongs to, so your build mirrors where your effort really goes.

Character page with level, rank and the five-attribute radar
  • STR – Vitality: health, sport, exercise, fitness goals.
  • INT – Intellect: work, IT, study, finance, business. Tasks without a matching category default here.
  • WIS – Wisdom: personal growth, mindset, reading, journaling. Daily logs add WIS too.
  • CHR – Charisma: relationships, family, social, networking. Activity in the community feed adds CHR.
  • DEX – Dexterity: chores, errands, admin – plus a bonus for any quick task estimated at 15 minutes or less.

That last rule is a small gift for anyone who struggles to start: a pile of 10-minute tasks is now a DEX grind, not a chore list.

Quests, dailies and the daily grind

Adding quests is fast. Press Q and type in plain English: Gym leg day today @18:00 ~1h !p2 #Fitness. Date, time, duration, priority and goal are parsed for you. Priority and estimate decide how much XP the quest is worth, and the difficulty setting (trivial → heroic) affects rewards.

Dailies come in two flavors:

  • Recurring tasks – *daily, *weekly or custom intervals like every 3 days. Good for things with a time and a duration.
  • Habits – yes/no or numeric with a daily target (for example 8 glasses of water). Bad habits work as debuffs: set a limit, and the day fails if you go over. See the habit tracker for details.

The grind that pays off most is boring: the daily log (energy, focus, sleep, exercise, water…) gives XP and builds an overall activity streak. CORTEX tracks one overall streak (current and best) rather than a separate streak per habit – fewer streaks to protect, less "I broke one, so why bother".

When the quest log gets long, Plan My Day slots today's quests into free time with one click, overdue first, then by priority, then quick wins.

Loot: a reward shop you stock yourself

Points that buy nothing get boring fast. In CORTEX, finished tasks pay out credits, and you spend them in a reward shop that you stock with your own real-life rewards: an episode of your show, a new game, takeout, a guilt-free afternoon off.

Reward shop with a mystery box and custom real-life rewards
  • Custom rewards with rarity tiers – price the big ones high so they feel earned.
  • Daily reward of 100 credits for showing up.
  • Mystery box for 250 credits, for when you want a gamble.
  • Equipment (Rare / Epic / Legendary) shows on your public profile.
  • Achievements unlock as you play, including a few secret ones.

No pay-to-win. Credits can't be bought with real money. The only way to get loot is to do the work. You can gift credits and items to friends, though.

Raids and alliances: co-op mode

Solo play works, but co-op is where many people stay consistent. Alliances are CORTEX guilds:

  • Create an alliance, invite friends, assign roles.
  • Alliance chat and direct messages.
  • Alliance challenges and "wars" – your group's raid content.
  • A leaderboard and a social feed to show off finished quests.

For a two-player quest line – a couple, study buddies, gym partners – use a shared goal and assign tasks to each other.

Healthy gaming balance: don't let the game play you

Gamification is a tool, and every tool can be misused. A few rules we design around – and recommend:

  1. Reward outcomes, not app time. XP comes from finished tasks and logs, not from opening the app. If you are fiddling with the setup more than doing quests, stop and do one quest.
  2. Keep rewards real but proportional. One episode for a 25-minute focus block is fine. A new console for "answered emails" breaks the economy.
  3. Rest is part of the build. Sleep and recovery are tracked in the daily log for a reason. Grinding through exhaustion is not a strategy.
  4. A broken streak is not game over. Respawn tomorrow. Missing a day early on does not stop habit formation (Lally et al., 2009).
  5. Compare with past you. Leaderboards are fun; the monthly review against your own previous month is more useful.

Lally and colleagues (2009) found that habits took a median of 66 days to become automatic, with a range of 18 to 254 days. Plan for a long campaign, not a weekend sprint – more in how to build habits.

Best habit RPG app? Choose your class

The best-known habit RPG is Habitica, with pixel-art avatars, pets and party quests – a great pick if you love the classic retro RPG feel. CORTEX takes a different angle: it is a full productivity system first (planner, one-click day plan, timers, reports, goals) with a game layer on top. Pick by playstyle:

  • You want a cozy pixel-art RPG for habits: try Habitica.
  • You want your whole workday – tasks, plan, time tracking – to feel like an RPG: CORTEX.

Frequently asked questions

What is a life RPG app?

A life RPG app turns real-life tasks and habits into game mechanics like quests, XP, levels, attributes and loot. CORTEX is a free life RPG app where finished tasks level up five attributes and earn credits for real-life rewards.

What is the best RPG habit tracker?

It depends on your playstyle. Habitica is the classic pixel-art habit RPG. If you want an RPG layer on a full planner with a one-click day plan and time tracking, CORTEX is built for that.

Is there an RPG-like habit tracker that is free?

Yes. CORTEX is free for everyone with all features, including XP, levels, ranks, attributes, achievements, the reward shop and alliances. Credits cannot be bought, so there is no pay-to-win.

How do attributes level up in CORTEX?

Each finished task adds XP to an attribute based on the category of its goal: health to STR, work and study to INT, personal growth to WIS, relationships to CHR and chores to DEX. Quick tasks of 15 minutes or less give a DEX bonus.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Create or join an alliance with roles, chat, challenges and a leaderboard, or share a goal with a friend and assign tasks to each other.

Is gamifying habits healthy?

It can be, if rewards follow real outcomes and stay proportional. Use rest and sleep as part of your build, and treat a missed day as a respawn, not a game over.
