Real-life side quests: 120 ideas and a generator to break the routine

· Updated

A real-life side quest is a small, optional adventure outside your usual routine: a street you have never walked, a skill you learn in one afternoon, a dinner alone without your phone. It does not move your career or your grades forward, and that is the point. Below you will find a random quest generator, 120 side quest ideas sorted by cost, time and whether you go solo or with friends, and a simple way to run side quests like a game.

In short
  • A side quest is an optional activity outside your main routine, done for novelty, fun or curiosity rather than for a goal; the term comes from video games.
  • In a 2020 study in Nature Neuroscience, days with more variety in the places people visited (tracked by GPS) went along with more positive mood. The study is correlational, so it does not prove that novelty causes happiness.
  • Good side quests are small, specific and finishable: one afternoon or less, one clear action, and a clear point where you are done.
  • A simple game layer helps: one side quest slot per week, three difficulty tiers (Common 10 XP, Rare 25 XP, Epic 50 XP) and a log of what you did.
  • Chores and to-dos are main quests. If it is on your obligations list, it is not a side quest.

What counts as a side quest (and what doesn't)

In role-playing games, the main quest moves the story forward and side quests are optional missions that add flavor: you help a stranger, explore a cave, learn a recipe. NPR's Life Kit described the real-life version in 2026 as an activity whose only purpose is to bring more whimsy and exploration into your day-to-day.

A practical test for whether something is a side quest:

  • It is optional. Nobody is waiting for it, and skipping it costs nothing.
  • It is new or rare for you. Your usual Friday bar is not a side quest; a bar you have never set foot in might be.
  • It is finishable. "Get into photography" is a hobby. "Take a 1-hour photo walk shooting only doors" is a quest.
  • It fits in a day. Most good side quests take 15 minutes to half a day.

What doesn't count: laundry, homework, client work, the dentist. Those are main quests. They belong on your to-do list, and you can gamify them too (see how to gamify your life). Side quests are the opposite: the fun, unnecessary stuff you never schedule because nothing forces you to.

Why side quests feel so good

There is a reason a small adventure can make an ordinary week feel longer and brighter. In a study published in Nature Neuroscience (Heller et al., 2020), researchers tracked the locations of 132 young adults in New York and Miami by GPS for three to four months and asked them about their mood by phone. On days when people moved around more varied places, they tended to report more positive mood. Among the participants who also had a brain scan, the link was stronger in those whose scans showed tighter coupling between the hippocampus and striatum, areas involved in memory and reward.

Two honest caveats. First, the study is correlational: it shows that variety and good mood go together, not that a new café will cheer you up. Good mood may also make people more likely to go out. Second, it measured variety of places, not side quests specifically. Still, it fits what many people notice: routine weeks blur together, and new experiences stand out.

Games add a second reason. Side quests in games work because they are optional (you choose them, so they feel like play, not work), novel (a new area, a new character) and rewarded (loot, XP, a bit of story). You can borrow all three. Just don't expect points alone to do the work: a well-known review of gamification studies found that effects depend heavily on the context and the people involved (Hamari, Koivisto & Sarsa, 2014).

120 side quest ideas

Every quest is tagged with how long it takes, what it costs and an XP tier. Use the tiers as a rough guide: Common (10 XP) is quick and easy, Rare (25 XP) takes an hour or a bit of courage, Epic (50 XP) takes half a day or a real step outside your comfort zone. Costs are rough: "Under $20" means cheap for most people, "Splurge" means it costs more. Check local rules and safety before anything outdoors or in the water.

How to run side quests like a game

Ideas are easy. Actually doing them is where most lists die. A light game structure fixes that:

  1. Book a weekly quest slot. One fixed window, like Saturday morning or Wednesday evening. A side quest without a slot stays a nice idea.
  2. Use difficulty tiers. Start with Common quests. Once you have done three, unlock Rare. Epic quests are for when you have a free half day.
  3. Keep a quest log. Date, quest, one sentence about what happened. After two months, reading it back is half the reward.
  4. Add real loot. Pick a small reward in advance for every 100 XP: a book, a fancy coffee, a new game. If you need ideas that don't eat your whole evening, try a dopamine menu.
  5. Party up. Ask one friend to roll a quest from the generator every week and compare logs. Accountability works better than willpower.
  6. Allow re-rolls. If a quest doesn't fit your budget, weather or mood, roll again. The point is to do something, not that exact thing.

  • Attend a public lecture outside your major (free, 1 h)
  • Cook a full meal using only what is already in your kitchen (free, 1 h)
  • Host a "teach me something" night with your roommates (free, 1 h)
  • Run a scavenger hunt on campus (free, 1 h)

  • Take $10 to a flea market and find the strangest object (under $20, 1 h)
  • Learn 20 words in a new language and use one in a sentence (free, 1 h)

Side quests also make good rewards after an exam week. If you want to turn studying itself into a game, see how to gamify studying.

Introverts: 8 picks

  • Spend one phone-free hour in a park
  • Spend a whole museum visit on just three pieces
  • Take a photo walk with one theme
  • Learn to recognize five birds by their song

  • Find a hidden courtyard or rooftop spot
  • Email a thank-you note to someone who helped you (social, but on your terms)

Track your side quests in CORTEX

CORTEX is a free gamified productivity app: tasks, a one-click day plan, time tracking and habits, with XP, levels and real-life rewards. It has no built-in quest generator (that is what the tool above is for), but it is a good place to log quests and get rewarded for them:

  • Make a "SideQuests" goal and add each quest as a task. With quick capture you can type it in one line: Try a new café saturday ~1h #SideQuests. The generator above gives you that line ready to copy.
  • Set the difficulty from trivial to heroic. Difficulty changes the credits a task pays; XP comes from the task's priority and estimate.
  • Spend credits in your reward shop. You create the rewards yourself (a concert ticket, a new game) and price them by rarity, from basic to legendary.
  • Grow your attributes. CORTEX has five attributes: STR, INT, WIS, CHR and DEX. A task feeds the attribute that matches its goal's category, so a quest in a goal categorized as "Social" builds CHR, and one in "Health" or "Fitness" builds STR.
  • Quest with an alliance. Alliances have a shared chat and challenges, which makes group quests easy to organize.

Frequently asked questions

What is a real-life side quest?

A real-life side quest is a small, optional activity outside your normal routine that you do for fun, novelty or curiosity, like exploring a new neighborhood or learning a card trick. The term comes from video games, where side quests are optional missions next to the main story.

What are good side quests to do alone?

Try eating at a restaurant without your phone, taking a day trip by train, going to a movie alone, a solo hike, or asking a bookstore clerk for their favorite book and buying it. Start with short, low-stakes quests and work up to bigger ones.

What are cheap side quests?

Many of the best ones are free: watching the sunrise from a high point, a themed photo walk, stargazing, a free museum day, a library visit, a group run or a scavenger hunt with friends. The free section above lists 30 of them, and the generator can filter for free quests only.

How do I make my life feel like a game?

Give tasks and side quests XP by difficulty, keep a visible log or level bar, and trade points for small real rewards you choose in advance. Keep the system simple so running it never becomes a chore; our guide on how to gamify your life walks through it step by step.

Is there an app for real-life side quests?

You can use the free generator on this page to pick quests, and any to-do or gamified productivity app to track them. In CORTEX you can add quests as tasks in a "SideQuests" goal, earn XP and credits, and spend credits on rewards you define yourself.

How often should I do a side quest?

Once a week is a good start: often enough to break the routine, rare enough to stay special. Book a fixed slot, like Saturday morning, and roll a new quest whenever the old one does not fit.
